Taylor and I met at work just like Barack and Michelle Obama (disclaimer we are significantly less cool). I am originally from Bangor Maine and decided to move to Denver to get a taste of city life and west coast powder. When I went in for my first job interview, I met and knew immediately that I liked Taylor. It was not his ill-fitted bomber jacket or trendy Warby Parker eyeglasses that got me. Instead he had pen all over his hands and was the first to laugh at my very rehearsed jokes. I got the job! And as fate would have it, Taylor and I sat next to each other. All my east coast friends quickly called him my Colorado Boyfriend. Months passed while I patiently waited for Taylor to ask me out…. Finally I asked him, and he did indeed become my Colorado Boyfriend. Life was good, wedding planning was easy, dress shopping was fun, we continued as the happy-go-lucky couple that we are. I work in resort design, and by February, all of the International work was drying up, and layoffs were impending. That was ok! We were moving to Portland, Maine in a few weeks, getting married and starting life in a new city. But by the time we moved to Maine, our wedding was canceled, our new jobs on hold and the world was turned upside down. Our relationship was solid. The world seemed to be splitting apart, but we were hanging in and on to each other. We are lucky. We are lucky for our health, our families, and our friends' health and to be able to take time right now to educate ourselves on subjects we had no context for. We have been able to find work, connect digitally with loved ones, and recommit ourselves to each other. Having a wedding would be amazing. A huge bright spot in 2020 for us and a memory to cherish and share with loved ones.

It has taken me a minute to address and make a clear statement in support of Black lives. As a black woman it would seem self-evident, but there is not one of us who doesn’t need to take a hard, hard look at what has brought us to this point in history. We at @caswellfarmmaine, @the.bar.association.maine & @barnandtablecatering pledge to strengthen our Ethos and support BIPOC communities, people that work with and for us, and the people we love the most in this world. We Commit to strive to be louder, stronger, and brave enough to search our own biases in order to bring about constructive change at this time of Revolution. Our work is to dismantle and dissect the status quo and rebuild our families and institutions with Social Justice at the forefront. This is the moment to use your voice. Racism comes out in the most cunning of ways, lives in dark corners, in our policies and is uttered with impunity entirely too often.
